Who are you, what do you do, and where are you from?
My name is Lucy Singleton, I am originally from Northampton, Massachusetts, and I am in my final semester at Berklee College of Music.
What does sustainability mean to you?
Sustainability, on a personal level, to me means making active choices in our daily lives to reduce and eliminate unnecessary waste within our lifestyles. On a larger scale, sustainability is the goal which I believe every person, organization, corporation, etc., should be aiming to achieve in every aspect of their practices.
How do you incorporate sustainability into daily life as a musician?
I am fairly old fashioned when it comes to writing, learning, and rehearsing music, so I still rely on pen and paper for all of these. I make sure
all my notebooks are made from sustainably sourced, recycled paper, or wood-paper alternatives like bamboo or hemp. Likewise, I make sure my pens are made from recycled materials, as well as using refillable fountain pens to minimize waste. Fountain pens also make my handwriting better, and flow better than any other pen I've ever used - bonus!
How can artists have an impact on sustainability?
Artists have a bigger voice than the average person, and this gives us a wonderful opportunity to share our good habits and promote things like sustainable sources and personal practices to our listeners.
